One of nine arrests in operation held in Southall
A Metropolitan Police live facial recognition operation in Southall led to nine arrests on Tuesday 16 June, after officers used the technology to identify wanted individuals along The Broadway and South Road. The deployment, led by Southall’s Safer Neighbourhood Team and supported by proactive units, ran for six hours and used cameras to scan passers-by in real time. Images were checked against a pre-approved watchlist of suspects wanted for a range of offences. Police said the operation resulted in the arrest of nine wanted individuals, including suspects linked to robbery and knife-related offences. Officers also identified several people on the Sex Offender Register to ensure they were complying with their legal conditions. One of the arrests involved a man suspected of a sexual assault who had evaded police for 15 years before being stopped by local officers. Throughout the day, officers engaged with residents and businesses, many of whom expressed support for the visible policing presence and the use of technology to target offenders. Acting Inspector Laurence Bisdee, who oversaw the operation, described it as a strong example of how technology can support frontline policing. “This was a successful operation demonstrating how technology can support officers in keeping our communities safe,” he said. “Local officers are on the street working hard every day to try and make a difference in Southall, so it was great to be part of an operation which delivered such fantastic results and removed wanted and violent offenders off our streets.” The Metropolitan Police say live facial recognition is used under strict legal and operational controls to ensure it is deployed proportionately and responsibly.
