Victory is sweet for Ealing Hospital’s Paediatric Diabetes Team who were crowned champs at the Diabetes Nursing Awards (DNA) a year after finishing runners up.

Its successful bid for Paediatric Nurse of the Year reflects staff’s work encouraging more children and young people to wear devices that automatically administer insulin as well as being able to remotely monitor blood sugar levels.

The team has observed a noticeable rise in children with Type One diabetes and, five years ago, there were just five using the pumps with that number now having rising to 112.

Members of the team, which speaks seven languages between them, enlist the help of Rufus the Bear to explain how the pump works with their youngest patients.

The disappointment of just missing out last year enabled the team to take on board the judges’ comments and improve its working methods.

Emily Mayhew, DNA organiser said, “Ealing exemplifies excellence in paediatric diabetes nursing. Their compassion, innovation and teamwork are making a real difference to young people’s lives and futures.”

Judges noted the ethnically diverse caseload managed by the team and their high success in getting youngsters to use pumps compared to other areas in the UK.
