A group of nurse educators at LNWH Trust are helping critical care nurses at Ealing Hospital gain qualifications without the burden of paying university fees.

The team, who recently won a national award for their work, designed an in-house course allowing intensive care nurses to gain a Postgraduate Certificate in Critical Care.

To date, 65 nurses have completed the training which has helped strengthen and retain the trust’s critical care workforce which played a crucial role during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Lecturer Practitioner Melanconia Duval Pazzaglia, an experienced ICU nurse seconded from the University of West London, has worked closely with the education and intensive care teams to develop the programme.

Melanconia said, “When we invest in our nurses, we invest in better care for our patients. I hope winning an award inspires others to share their own innovations.

Students have to design their own improvement project as part of the course. This has included nurse-led antibiotic stewardship and a mindfulness strategy to reduce stress and improve resilience.

The team’s work was recognised at the Nursing Times Awards where it won the Nurse Education Provider of the Year (Post-Registration) category beating more than 600 applicants.
