A prolific shoplifter responsible for more than 20 offences across north west London has been jailed after being caught by police in less than a minute.
Sam Riley, 37, of Dabbs Hill Lane, Northolt, was sentenced to 12 weeks’ imprisonment at Willesden Magistrates’ Court on Friday, 29 May after pleading guilty to a string of shoplifting offences.
Officers on patrol in Petts Hill, Northolt, were alerted to the incident on Wednesday, 22 April, when a suspect attempted to leave a petrol station shop carrying a bag of stolen goods. Police intervened immediately and arrested Riley at the scene and footage of the arrest has been released by police.
Earlier in the month, Riley had already admitted to 21 separate shoplifting offences at the same court, with investigations revealing he was wanted in connection with more than 20 additional incidents in the area.
Sergeant Ashleigh Harte, from the Harrow Safer Neighbourhood Team, said tackling repeat offenders remains a key priority for the Metropolitan Police.
She said: “Tackling shoplifting continues to be a priority for the Met and we are focused on repeat offenders such as Sam Riley.
“Shoplifting is down by 28 per cent in Ealing and, across the Met, we have nearly doubled the number of shoplifting cases solved in the last year.”
Police say improved use of technology, including facial recognition, as well as closer working with retailers, has contributed to the progress.
Figures released by the Met show reported shoplifting offences across London fell by 3.7 per cent in the last financial year — the equivalent of around 3,200 fewer incidents.
At the same time, the positive outcome rate — which includes arrests, charges and convictions — increased from 7.6 per cent to 14 per cent.

Police also highlighted the importance of CCTV evidence in securing convictions. Currently, around 20 per cent of reported shoplifting cases include CCTV footage, but where high-quality images are available, suspects can be identified in about 80 per cent of cases.
