A 31-year-old man who had been on the run for three years after being convicted of taking part in a gang rape of a teenager has been apprehended.

Dmitri Ceban was identified by the Gardai in Ireland after he was caught speeding. It is believed that, after moving between various countries after fleeing the UK before he was due to be sentenced at Isleworth Crown Court in May 2021, he had been living in a small town in Kildare.

Along with four other men he had been convicted of what was described as a ‘prolonged and repeated attack’ which took place in August 2017. Ceban received a 16-year sentence in his absence and was placed on Interpol’s most wanted list.

The four men had met the 17-year-old girl in a night club before putting her in the back of a car they pretended was a taxi. They then took her to a house in Northolt and raped her multiple times over the course of an hour and a half. Immediately afterwards, she went to hospital after the attack and reported it to the police.

CCTV from within the night club and the venue’s ID entry system enabled police to identify Ceban and his associates.

Detective Constable Angie Meadows, who worked on the investigation, said, "Over the course of my career this is one of the worst assaults I have ever dealt with and they deserve such lengthy prison sentences."

Octavian Lupu, of Coldharbour Lane, Hayes, was sentenced to 20 years' imprisonment. 25-year-old Andrei Rotaru, of Clun Road, Littlehampton, was sentenced to 17 years' imprisonment. 40-year-old Alexandru Cimbir of Rabournmead Drive, Northolt, was sentenced to 18-and-a-half years' imprisonment.

Ceban will now be extradited to the UK to face another sentencing hearing.
