An application for a large housing development in the centre of Southall has been given the go ahead by Ealing Council.

The scheme by housing association Peabody, in partnership with the council, will include 564 housing units in eight buildings including three tower blocks close to the train station. The site was formerly used as a car park.

The Green project is described by Peabody as a low carbon development. It was designed by Hunters Architects and claims a reduction of CO2 emissions of nearly two thirds.

About half of the units will be classed as affordable including 157 for London affordable rent and 112 for shared ownership.

he homes have been described by Peabody as “low carbon” with the development achieving an overall reduction in CO2 emissions of at least 65.33%, according to planning papers.

Heating will be provided through a communal site-wide heat distribution network via a ground source heat pump while photovoltaic panels with a combined capacity of at 237kwp will be installed.

Simon Barry, regional development director at Peabody, said, “We are pleased that our plans have been approved for The Green to become a destination and a home for hundreds of residents.
“The Green will create public spaces for new and existing residents to live and socialise, whilst connecting them to green space and providing new jobs.

“We are looking forward to continue working with Ealing Council, the local businesses, community groups and local residents to transform the town centre at The Green.”

Black-owned music and events venue Tudor Rose, bordering the development site, was originally earmarked for redevelopment.

The venue will now be enhanced as an “important cultural asset,” says Peabody.
