At the request of the family of Jerald Netto, footage has been released of the push that killed him and the moments leading up to his death.

A teenager has been jailed for his manslaughter after an incident which started out with a prank that got out of hand.

At around 12:40am on Sunday 19 March last year, 62-year-old Mr Netto had been at a pub in the vicinity. CCTV footage shows him walking away passed the Clock Tower in Hanwell towards a group of youths who had congregated by a fast food restaurant near the junction of Boston Road and Uxbridge Road.

The teenager pulled Mr Netto’s trousers down which resulted in some pushing and shoving between him and the group after which Mr Netto fell to the floor.

The group walked away and Mr Netto got to his feet again. CCTV shows him stopping and leaning in the doorway of a cafe on the corner of Uxbridge Road and Boston Road.

The group see Mr Netto and appear to be shouting and jeering at him. At this point, the youth who originally pushed him to the floor, runs back and then approaches him from the rear, swiping his legs and then pushing him down again with considerable force.

Mr Netto fell face first to the pavement while the youth skipped over his motionless body and runs off along Boston Road.

Members of the public found Mr Netto on the pavement and called police who were there within five minutes and tracked down the person responsible and arrested him not far from the scene.

Mr Netto was taken to hospital where he died later that day from his injuries. His death was due to a hypoxic brain injury due to a prolonged cardiac arrest from commotio cerebri, arising from a fall.

The youth, who was 16 at the time of the attack and is now 17, cannot be named because of his age. He was sentenced this Friday (26 March) at the Old Bailey to twelve months in custody and a further twelve months supervision in the community, as part of a Detention and Training Order of 24 months.

Detective Chief Inspector Brian Howie, who led the investigation said, “Officers were on the scene within minutes and initially the suspect ran from them but he was quickly detained in a nearby garden.

"Our investigation showed that this tragic event began with a juvenile prank by the defendant and culminated with a deliberate assault which resulted in the death of Mr Netto.

"There is no excuse for this type of violence, the defendant was not acting in lawful self-defence and our enquiries soon established that his actions that evening were deliberate and disgraceful.

“My thoughts remain with Mr Netto’s family as they continue to come to terms with his death in such appalling circumstances. I know that this has been an incredibly difficult time for them and I hope that now legal proceedings have concluded, they can begin to find some peace.”

In a statement Mr Netto’s family said, “Jerald Netto was a loving son, husband, father, grandfather, uncle, cousin, friend and neighbour. We are left scarred for life. We will never come to terms with what happened to him on that terrible night. In his last moments he was humiliated, taken advantage of, attacked and killed by a sadistic criminal. Our lives will never be the same, we miss him every day and will continue to as each day passes without him in our world.”
