Met has faced fierce criticism from family for handling of the case
January 18, 2024 A man has been charged with the rape and manslaughter of a woman in Southall Park in 2021. 34-year-old Mohamed Iidow, of no fixed address, appeared at Uxbridge Magistrates’ Court on Friday, 12 January and was remanded in custody to appear at the Old Bailey this Friday (19 January). Mother-of-three and NHS worker Natalie Shotter was found dead on a bench in the park on 17 July 2021. Initially the police treated her death as unexpected, then arrested Iidow on 4 August 2021 but he was later released under investigation. The case was led by detectives from the Met’s Specialist Crime Command, with Detective Chief Inspector Wayne Jolley in charge. Natalie’s family allege that on the night she died two police officers were alerted to concerns about her welfare by a friend who had been out with her that evening in a group. He said she appeared to be unwell but they failed to come to her assistance or make a report as they were dealing with another incident at the time. They advised her friend to dial 101 but Natalie was then allegedly raped and killed by another man. The officers were investigated but did not face misconduct proceedings. Another officer faced investigation in relation to the killing for allegedly sharing CCTV footage of the incident. He was arrested by professional standards officers on 12 September 2022 on suspicion of misconduct in public office and suspended from duty. Natalie’s mother, Dr Cas Shotter Weetman, a lead advance practitioner in cardiology has led a campaign for justice for her daughter and believes that a culture of misogyny in the Met contributed to her daughter’s death.
