The Sikh Human Rights Group runs student-led environmental workshops
An Ealing based community group have been awarded almost £10,000 in National Lottery funding, to help them take action on climate change. The Sikh Human Rights Group in Ealing will be using the money to run a series of student-led environmental conservation workshops, seminars and practical projects within local secondary schools and Gurdwaras. The project aims to educate young people by offering them an insight into the practical environmental conservation methods they can undertake both at home and within their local communities. The group will also offer tree planting opportunities and environmental conservation talks for the general public, as well as provide some students with the opportunity to engage at the United Nations environmental events and at COP26. Dr Jasdev Singh Rai, Director at Sikh Human Rights Group said, “The support from The National Lottery Community Fund gives us a tremendous opportunity to work closely with the community through our interaction at COP26. Our project aims to bring greater awareness about climate issues and how every individual and family can help to mitigate and adapt to the negative impacts of climate change.” Nick Gardner, Head of Climate Action at The National Lottery Community Fund, said: “As COP26 begins and global climate change negotiations are under the world’s spotlight, it is encouraging to see that communities are also taking action locally. Our research clearly shows that communities are not only concerned about the climate emergency, but that they want to play their part in tackling it. Thanks to National Lottery players, we are able to support local climate action, funding innovative projects that are part of the drive towards net zero and that enable people and communities across the UK to prosper and thrive.” The funding announcement follows new research from The National Lottery Community Fund showing that 58% of people in London are worried about how climate change will affect their local community, as the UK prepares to host the 26th UN Climate Change Conference - COP26. When asked who is responsible for tackling climate change, nearly eight in ten people in London (78%) said local communities, while three in five (62%) say they are either currently taking part in community-led climate action or they plan to or will consider doing so in the future. The Together for Our Planet programme is open for applications until 5pm on 18 November 2021. It is awarding funding to help build on interest and excitement for COP26 by supporting a legacy of ongoing climate action projects in communities across the UK. Since 2016, The National Lottery Community Fund has awarded £397 million through more than 6,000 grants which involve environmental action, including action on waste and consumption, energy, transport, food and the natural environment.
