Autumn Ambles - Free Guided Walks

Enjoy some local countryside this weekend

26-27 September 2009

With the arrival of Autumn what better way to enjoy the colourful changes in nature and explore some of Ealing’s great places, meet new people and keep fit by taking part in one of over 40 free guided walks across the Capital.

‘Autumn Ambles’ takes place on 26-27 September 2009 and is the seventh free led walking weekend organised by Walk London and funded by Transport for London (TfL).

The seasonal walks are a further step towards making London one of the most walking friendly cities in Europe by 2012. Designed largely to be away from traffic, the free walks connect some of London’s best attractions, parks, woodlands, rivers, canals and open spaces.

As London 2012 gets ever closer, health and fitness are top of everyone’s agenda. Walking is one of the best and easiest ways to get fit and see the city at the same time. With over 40 walks on all seven routes of London’s 350 miles of Strategic Walk Network, there is something for everyone.

Two of the weekend’s 40 free led walks are taking place in, or passing through, Ealing:

· Saturday 26 September - a three and half hour walk to get your heart in shape and reach the highest part of the Capital Ring section 9 at Horsenden Hill at 85m before descending to quaint Harrow-on-the-Hill. Walk from Greenford to South Kenton. Meet at 13.30 at Greenford station and finish at South Kenton station.

· Saturday 26 September – Capital Ring section 8, from Osterley to Greenford - three hour easy level walk following the River Brent and the Grand Union Canal. Meet outside Boston Manor tube Station at 14.30 and finish at Greenford Station

Capital Ring section 9 Walk Leader, 64 year-old Nicole Carbonara, said: “This is a beautiful walk with lovely views from Horsenden and Harrow Hills. It’s a walk that gives you the opportunity to appreciate architecture with views of red brick buildings as you walk across fields. It is also good for those who take climbing as a challenge. Come and meet the Ranger for a talk on the history of Horsenden Hill. It will be good fun.”

Peter McBride, Head of Cycling, Walking and Accessibility at TfL, said:

“London’s great landmarks and green areas are best explored on foot. This is why we are investing £17million this year to make walking in London as attractive and enjoyable as possible. Seasonal events like the Autumn Ambles are a great way to inspire Londoners to enjoy their surroundings and encourage them to make more journeys by foot.”

All of the walks are led by experienced guides and some special walks will be joined by local history and wildlife experts. All of the walks start and finish either at or within easy reach of public transport and a free colour guide will be handed out on all the led walks along with a pin badge of the route logo as a keepsake.
