The Asda Express branch in West Ealing has been handed a zero-star food hygiene rating following a council inspection in July, with inspectors delivering one of the most severe assessment possible. The store, which opened in November 2023 as one of Asda’s first standalone convenience-format outlets, was found to have “almost total non-compliance” with statutory food-safety obligations.

Inspectors were particularly critical of the management of the branch, rating it as “urgent improvement required”—the lowest possible category. According to the Food Standards Agency’s definition, this level of concern indicates poor track record of compliance, little or no technical knowledge, little or no appreciation of hazards or quality control, and no food-safety management system.

In both Food Hygiene & Safety and Structural Compliance, the store received the most serious judgement available: almost total non-compliance. These categories cover essential areas such as safe food handling, cleanliness, layout, maintenance, and the systems required to prevent contamination.

In a statement provided in response to the inspection report, the store’s management acknowledged the findings: “We agree with the inspection results but have since carried out the following improvements: – The establishment has been thoroughly cleaned, and procedures are in place to ensure that cleanliness is maintained. – The staff have been trained/re-trained/given instruction/are under revised supervisory arrangements. – The business continues to make improvements following the inspection, with actions taken to address the issues that were identified at the time and to help prevent any recurrence. We continue to cooperate with Environmental Health Officers and will be submitting a request for a re-inspection to enable the food hygiene rating to be reassessed when considered appropriate.”

The branch, located on the Uxbridge Road, was launched less than three years ago as part of Asda’s push into the small-format convenience market. At the time, it was only the fourth Asda Express store in the country, intended to compete with Tesco Express, Sainsbury’s Local and Co-op’s neighbourhood outlets.

An Asda spokesperson said, “We’d like to reassure customers that since the inspection in July, we’ve worked closely with the inspecting officer to address the points raised, and they have confirmed they are satisfied that these have now been resolved. We will be applying for a re-rating and expect this to better reflect the high standards we set."
