Inspectors say urgent improvement needed at local branch of bakery chain
March 19, 2026 The Wenzel’s bakery branch near Ealing Broadway Station has been handed the lowest possible food hygiene rating following an inspection by Ealing council hygiene officers. The visit resulted in a score a rating of zero stars being awarded on 10 February meaning the inspectors deemed that urgent improvement Is necessary. The store was closed temporarily after the visit and a sign posted on the window indicated that the reason for the closure was an infestation of mice. The shop received the lowest marks across all three assessment categories: Food Hygiene and Safety, Structural Compliance and Confidence in Management. The rating places the Ealing Broadway branch among only two Wenzel’s outlets nationwide not to hold a rating of four or five stars. The other exception is the company’s branch in Denham, Buckinghamshire. Wenzel’s The Bakers has expanded rapidly in recent years and now operates more than 100 branches across London and the Home Counties. The business began as a family bakery in North West London in 1975 and has since grown into a large chain, with many stores run on a franchise ‑based model. The Ealing Broadway shop has been open since August 2021. Its West Ealing branch closed in 2023, with the company citing persistent theft, anti ‑social behaviour and intimidation of staff as reasons for shutting the site. A score of zero indicates that inspectors found serious failings requiring immediate action. While the council has not yet published the full inspection report, the rating confirms that urgent improvements are needed to bring the premises up to acceptable standards. Businesses receiving a zero score are usually revisited within a short timeframe to ensure corrective measures have been taken. Wenzel’s remains a popular budget bakery option on Ealing Broadway, particularly with commuters and students. We have asked Wenzel’s for a comment.
