Junior school building recognised as model of sustainable design
December 3, 2025 Notting Hill & Ealing High School (NHEHS) has been named the winner of the 2025 New London Architecture (NLA) Award for Education, recognising its newly completed Junior School building as a model for sustainable, inclusive learning environments in the capital. Designed by architects Hawkins\Brown, the building has been praised for its innovative use of natural materials, thoughtful integration with the surrounding neighbourhood, and commitment to student wellbeing. Judges described the project as a benchmark for future-focused educational design, highlighting its environmental credentials and flexible learning spaces. The NLA Awards, supported by the Mayor of London, celebrate projects that contribute to a more sustainable and inspiring city. The new Junior School building’s exterior features glazed and hit-and-miss brickwork that echoes local character, while inside, cross-laminated timber beams and floors create warm, calming spaces designed to support mental health and concentration. Facilities include specialist rooms for art, science, music and computing, a large multi-use hall, additional Sixth Form classrooms, and a light-filled library topped with a rooftop lantern. Outdoor areas have been designed to encourage hands-on learning, with a science garden, forest school zone, and dedicated play spaces for all age groups. At the heart of the building is a flexible foyer — a bright, open space for informal learning, small-group collaboration. Kate Bevan, Head of the Junior School, said, “Our new school supports us in delivering the exceptional education our students deserve. They strengthen teaching in core subjects while also enabling a rich programme in sport, music, and the arts. Most importantly, they give our pupils a sense of identity, belonging, and the chance to develop lifelong passions.” More details about the project are available via the New London Architecture website.
