Ealing Borough looks set to lose its last Crown Post Office following the announcement of a major closure programme.

The Northolt Post Office on Mandeville Road appears on a list of 115 branches that are either to be shut or handed over to third parties to run.

Crown Post Offices are those run directly by the Post Office but are thought to be more expensive to operate. The Southall Post Office closed this March and the one in Acton was shut in October 2018.

It is believed that about 1,000 jobs may be lost across the country through these closures.

The Crown Post Offices represent a small proportion of the 11,500 branches the organisation has across the country.

A strategic review, led by the Post Office’s new chairman Nigel Railton who used to run Camelot, is aiming to respond to falling revenue, increased costs and competition. The Post Office is expected to take a further financial hit as it is forced to pay out more compensation to sub-postmasters wrongly accused of fraud due to the faulty Horizon IT system.

Liberal Democrat Councillor Connie Hersch, Crime, Communities and Town centres said, “Liberal Democrats say it is very disappointing to see that the Post Office HQ is looking to close Northolt and Southall post offices in our area. People have suffered in Acton when the Crown Post Office closed a number of years ago. These are key and essential services for many parts of the borough and we support efforts to keep them open for all members of the community from small business owners to vulnerable individuals and pensioners.”
