Lidl has begun work to fit out its new store in West Ealing in what it says is a multi-million-pound investment in the premises previously occupied by Wilko.

The new supermarket will be four times bigger than the one it owns across the road on The Broadway with a sales area of 1,371sq m including a bakery.

The existing store will remain open during the construction period with a switchover planned at the beginning of next year.

Grant Shulton, Lidl GB’s Regional Head of Property, said, “It’s full steam ahead with the fit out works for our new store in West Ealing, and we’re optimistic that we’ll have the new store open for shoppers in early 2025. This significant upgrade reflects our ambition to expand and enhance our offering to customers across the capital, ensuring that whatever their postcode, they have convenient access to the best products at the lowest possible prices.”

The discount retailer, which recently overtook Asda to become the third biggest in the UK, also announced that it had gained planning permission for its new store in Brentford this week.
