Fire Brigade issues warning about risks posed by naked flames
April 16, 2026 Two people were taken to hospital after a fire broke out at a house of multiple occupancy on Northfield Avenue in West Ealing on Wednesday afternoon. Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters were called to the end-of-terrace property shortly after 2pm. The London Fire Brigade said the first of four emergency calls was received at 14.04, prompting crews from Southall, Chiswick and Heston fire stations to attend. Part of the first floor was damaged in the blaze, which was brought under control by 14.31. The building had been converted into a house of multiple occupancy, and the London Ambulance Service transported two people to hospital for treatment. Fire investigators believe the incident was accidental, caused by a lamp that had been left too close to flammable materials. The Brigade used the incident to remind residents of the risks posed by naked flames, candles and incense, particularly in shared homes. They advise never leaving candles, incense sticks or oil burners unattended — including Diya lamps used during worship and festivals — and ensuring they are fully extinguished before leaving a room or going to bed. Heat-resistant holders should always be used, placed on a stable surface and kept well away from curtains, papers, furniture and clothing. The Brigade also warns that tea lights become extremely hot and can melt through plastic surfaces such as televisions or baths if not placed in proper holders. All naked flames, including matches and lighters, should be kept out of reach of children and pets.
