A routine vehicle stop in Southall has led to criminal charges against a serving Metropolitan Police officer and a former colleague, after prosecutors alleged that unnecessary and disproportionate force was used during an arrest on Carlyle Avenue.

PC Jason Mugg, 30, and former PC Darren Boast, 40, appeared at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday 16 September charged with assault causing actual bodily harm. Both men were bailed and are due to appear at Isleworth Crown Court on 14 October.

The incident took place on 14 August 2023 in on the residential street in Southall. According to the charge, officers stopped a vehicle and subsequently arrested a 34-year-old man, during which force was allegedly used that went beyond what was necessary. The man sustained injuries requiring hospital treatment.

PC Mugg is currently attached to the West Area Command Unit, which covers Ealing, Hillingdon and Hounslow. Boast was serving in the same unit at the time of the Southall stop but has since left the Metropolitan Police.

The charges follow an investigation by the Met’s Directorate of Professional Standards, which reviewed the officers’ conduct during the arrest. The Directorate is responsible for examining allegations of misconduct and criminal behaviour by serving officers.

The Met has not released further details about the circumstances of the stop, citing ongoing legal proceedings.

Both officers will return to court next month as the case moves to the Crown Court stage.
