Armed police were called to South Ealing area this Tuesday morning (13 January) after reports were received of a man claiming to have a grenade.

Officers asked residents of Venetia Road to leave their homes and other streets in the area were cordoned off from around 9:50am. A Met Police drone was also observed above the scene and fire engines and ambulances were also present.

A heavily armoured Bearcat vehicle — normally used in high-risk operations — was seen at the scene.

A man, believed to be in his sixties, was inside one of the terraced properties on the street. Officers said that he was in possession of a number of knives but that there was no active grenade or other explosive device at the property.

Police have engaged with the man and six armed officers were observed by residents entering the property. A negociator is understood to have spoken to the man inside the house.

There were no reports of any injuries and the man was safely detained by 3:30pm. He was arrested on suspicion of possession of offensive weapons.

The police have ruled out any suggestion of the incident being terror related.
