A crowdfunding appeal has been launched at the Questors Theatre to replace the roof at the Judi Dench Playhouse.

The current rood is leaking badly causing a potential safety risk to cast, crew and audiences. As Ealing borough’s only producing theatre, it has launched the appeal and it has already attracted the support of the actor it was named after. Dame Judi Dench says she warmly supports effort to raise £100,000 to replace the aged roof.

For over 90 years, The Questors has been staging theatre within the Ealing community and beyond. Its innovative Judi Dench Playhouse was built in 1964, with a then state-of-the-art flat roof. This has now come to the end of its life and, despite periodic patching, leaks badly after rainfall. The damage caused by sustained water ingress means that there is a significant risk that their Playhouse will become unusable. This renovation is therefore essential to ensure the safety, well-being and comfort of their cast, crew, members, audiences, and the continued production of shows. A new roof will also provide them with more environmentally sustainable heat and sound insulation.

Dame Judi Dench said, “I warmly support The Questors Crowdfunder to raise funds towards the cost of replacing the roof of the Playhouse that bears my name. I hope you will also agree that securing the future of the Playhouse is very important and donate what you can. In this way, we can ensure that The Questors continues to develop creative artists and provide theatre of an excellent standard to the community.”

The Questors Chair, Doug King, said, “The Questors provides an extraordinary range of opportunities for people of all ages and backgrounds to engage in creative activity, and to see the fruits of their work on stage in our acclaimed Playhouse. Replacing the leaking roof this year is essential for the future of the Playhouse. Your help via the Crowdfunder will speed along meeting the costs of the roof replacement – and therefore also bring forward the planned follow-on steps for refurbishing the interior of the Playhouse, including the replacement of the seating and improvements to access.”

Questors hope to have a new roof over the playhouse in time for its centenary celebrations.
