The only sin in classic drama The Country Wife is being found out!

Set in London, that well-known centre of vice and intrigue, in 1675, The Questors Theatre production of William Wycherley's The Country Wife has it all: gorgeous costumes, lots of laughs and a big dose of double-entendre.

The Country Wife runs from 27 January – 4 February in the Judi Dench Playhouse at The Questors Theatre.

If you’re a fan of a period drama and a bit of bawdiness, you’ll absolutely love The Country Wife.

In a society bent on pleasure-seeking and the flaunting of fashion, Horner, a notorious womaniser, has spotted ‘the country wife’. The pursuit is on! Meanwhile, his friend Harcourt has fallen head over heels in love with the beautiful Alithea. Unfortunately, she is engaged to the ridiculous Sparkish, a would-be wit and full time fop.

Written in 1675, The Country Wife really pushed the boundaries of what was acceptable on stage. The play is daring and sexy as well as outrageously funny. It was even described as ‘the most licentious play in the English language’ by famous actor of the day, David Garrick.

Of The Questors Theatre production, director John Davey says, “I’m fortunate to have an excellent team and a sparkling cast to approach this play. We’ve done our best to do justice to the Restoration style with its polished language and wit and its distinctive costumes and manners, while bringing our own particular modern spin to it. We’ve found it great fun to work on and hope our audiences will find it even more fun to watch!”
