Campaigners are claiming victory after Transport for London confirmed there will be a lift access at Hanwell station before 2019.

The station would have been the only one on the Crossrail network without such a provision and residents and politicians have been petitioning for one to be put in place.

The works will be added to the improvements already on-going at the station, including the re-opening of the southern entrance.

Cllr Bassam Mahfouz, Cabinet Member for Transport & Environment said of the announcement:

"This is amazing news for Hanwell.  It just wasn’t right that Hanwell would be the only Crossrail station in the whole of west London not to have a lift.  Our success at getting a lift in Greenford and our work on a lift for Hanwell alongside a great community campaign with Transport for All means that Hanwellians will get a station fit for the 21st century.

''Another victory against all the odds for accessibility means those with disabilities, parents with buggies and those accessing Heathrow with bags of luggage will be just some of the people benefiting from this announcement.  Together with the re-opening of the southern entrance to the station, currently underway, there will be a fantastic transformation to a key station.
