Tier 2 Covid-19 Restrictions Could Hit Ealing Soon If Infection Rate Keeps Rising
This would mean a ban on mixing between households in homes, with the rule of six continuing to apply in gardens and other outdoor settings. Although pubs and restaurants would remain open, the ban on mixing between households indoors is expected to apply to the hospitality sector. This latter restriction would have devasting effect on Ealing pubs and restaurants.
Five London boroughs had more than 100 /100,000 new Covid-19 cases in the week of 2 to 8 October 2020 – Richmond, Hackney, Ealing, Redbridge and Harrow.

Northwick Park and Ealing Hospitals Make Public Statements About Their Readiness for Covid-19 Second Wave
‘Huffpost’ on 10 October 2020 described how the two hospitals have created two separate A&Es – a ‘likely Covid A&E’ and an ‘unlikely Covid A&E’. Northwick Park has more than doubled its critical care equipment. Medical Director Martin Kuper said, ‘We now know that steroids, which are relatively cheap, do help’. So far only two Covid-19 patients are on mechanical ventilation at the hospitals. By mid-April 2020 48 Covid-19 patients at the two hospitals were on mechanical ventilation.
Covid-19 Response Has Cost Ealing Council £71 Million Since March 2020
Ealing Council claims the Government still owes it £14.8 million to repay Covid-19 response expenses. It also claims that next year’s budget ‘gap’ will be £28 million.
Covid-19 Testing and Tracing in Ealing
Recently a friend with an awful cold was asked by her GP to get tested for Covid-19. Although she lives in Southall close to the Featherstone Terrace test site, the NHS ‘system’ booked her a test in the West Midlands. On 6 October 2020 Ealing Council’s Public Health Director Anna Bryden said in public that the Council’s own contact tracing service could be up and running by the end of October 2020.
Increased Access to Ealing Central Public Library Services
Allegedly you can now return books and use the select and collect service to browse books. You can also now use a public PC within the library (pre-booking is required). Tel: 020 8825 6503 and email: centrallibrary@ealing.gov.uk. Opening times are 11:00m to 4:00pm Monday to Saturday.
But still no news on the re-opening of the five Community Managed Libraries at Hanwell, Northfields, Perivale, Pitzhanger and West Ealing. They have been no library services at these buildings for over nine months. The Local History Centre in Southall also remains closed.
Ealing Soup Kitchen Now Serving 140 Homeless People At Each Session
Ealing Soup Kitchen has now been operating for decades. Currently it offers soup and some other services on certain evenings at St John’s Church in Mattock Lane W13 and at The Salvation Army Hall on Leeland Road W13. Before the pandemic 100 homeless people attended. This number has increased by 40%.
St John’s Church was one of the regular Winter night shelters for the homeless. However the Government has yet to issue Covid-19 response guidance about such services.

She has publicly called upon the Government to offer more support to Ealing Council and local communities to enable them to respond quickly and decisively to any fresh outbreaks now.
Rupa Huq MP Promotes Vitamin D to Fight Covid-19
Along with Conservative MP David Davis, she is calling for a review of the benefits of Vitamin D as a weapon against Covid-19. Multiple studies have shown a possible link between a Vitamin D deficiency and increased risk of infection. However there is as yet no reliable proof of this.
Ealing Resident is the Longest Suffering Covid-19 Patient
‘The Sun’ on 9 October 2020 reported that Richard Wanigasekera has just returned home after 162 days in hospital. The 72 year old spent 28 days in a coma and 35 days on a ventilator. Richard has a weak heart and suffered several bouts of septicaemia. His treatments were at Northwick Park and Mount Vernon Hospitals.
Questors Theatre Raises £50,000 for Post Covid-19 Survival
The money was raised using Crowdfunding as part of the Theatres Trust initiative to prevent permanent closure of UK theatres. There has been a bit of activity at Questors with some tightly controlled performances. One took place out-of-doors and another in the Judy Dench Playhouse.
Ealing Magistrates’ Court Has Re-Opened
New practices and procedures have been implemented to make sure the building is safe and to minimise risks to the judiciary, staff and those attending courts and tribunals. More here.
