Ealing Town Centre Plans - The Fight Goes On |
Campaigners plan to lobby Mayor over redevelopment The London Mayor will be asked to reject controversial redevelopment proposals for the town centre. Benson Elliot and Londonewcastle plan to overhaul the Arcadia site (9-42 The Broadway) building flats (including an 18-storey block), shops, a music venue and promises of a 'boutique' cinema. Their application was given the green light at Ealing's planning committee last week. Campaigners were disappointed but say that they haven't given up on the battle and will pursue all possible avenues to ensure 'the heart isn't ripped out of Ealing'. Julian Smith from Save Ealing Centre (SEC) says: '' In Ealing we have a Council that doesn't listen to public opinion. That ignores objections raised in the strongest terms by expert national heritage bodies such as Historic England, the Victorian Society and Save Britain's Heritage. That even ignores the objections of the local MP. SEC believe that concerns raised by Historic England, the national expert conservation body and the government’s adviser on the historic environment, highlight that this particular application has wider implications. The last application to redevelop the Arcadia site was turned down by the Secretary of State following the call-in process.
