Little Ealing Primary School (LEPS) took home first position in two key events in the London Youth Games 2023 earlier this month.

On Thursday 23 March, the year 5/6 netball squad won gold in the Netball competition, beating Bishop Gilpin school from Merton into second place in a tense final.

The ‘hi-five’ mixed netball competition for juniors means that squads have only 5 players on court at any one time, with a maximum of two boys. The squad of 8 was made up of 5 girls and 3 boys from years 5 and 6 at LEPS. This is the first time the squad have won the London-wide netball final, which was cancelled last year due to the pandemic.

On Tuesday 21 March, the year 5/6 Sports Hall Athletics squad also won gold in their competition, triumphing in a combination of events including sprint relay, triple jump and javelin. This is the third time LEPS have taken home the year 5/6 gold in this event which is sponsored by the Mayor of London.

This month’s wins follow LEPS triumph in the NFL Flag National Championship in June 2022. LEPS went on to represent the UK in the international championships in Las Vegas earlier this year.

Caroline Hodges, Headteacher, LEPS said, ‘I’m so proud of the dedication and passion shown by the children to come out on top and win gold again in these prestigious London sporting events. It is fantastic that they have the opportunity to take part in something London-wide, and to be able to compete against other boroughs and schools because of the support for the London Youth Games given by The Mayor of London, Sport England, and NIKE. Representing the borough of Ealing makes us incredibly proud in anything we do, and I know the whole school were cheering them on to victory.’

Bobby Behzadi, Head of PE, LEPS said, ‘We put a lot of energy into the sports curriculum and activities at LEPS, and the kids match that with their enthusiasm for a whole range of sports, from netball to cricket to NFL. It’s amazing to see them achieve this success, to show them that hard work and dedication do pay off. Physical activity is so important for kids as we know, and I hope that this experience will inspire them to carry on finding joy in sport as they go into their secondary schools, and adulthood. The whole sports teaching staff couldn’t have asked any more of any of them on the day; they gave 100% and because of that, and all their hard word in training, they took home the gold.'
