A former pupil at a primary school in Ealing has returned as its head teacher.

The appointment of Craig Ross by St Gregory's Catholic School represents a realisation of a childhood dream. When 35-year-old Craig was in his final year at the school, he determined that his vocation would be teaching.

Craig told us, “My childhood years at St. Gregory’s were very special. It was in Year 6 where I knew I wanted to be like my inspirational teacher Mr Kelly. He truly valued getting to know his pupils and that enabled him to get the best out of us. At aged 11, I dreamed of having that impact on others when I was older.

“I always wanted to return to St. Gregory’s (my second home) and give back to the school that had given me so much as a child. This school community is so special. You can never really leave St. Gregory’s as you are always part of the school family. it was an absolute privilege to be appointed as a class teacher and a childhood dream to lead the school as Headteacher.”

After leaving St Gregory’s in 1998 he went to Cardinal Wiseman School before attending the University of Roehampton to earn a degree in Education. He worked in other schools in the area before joining the staff at St. Gregory’s over a decade ago to be greeted on his first day by school office staff who remembered him as a pupil.

Having worked as a math co-ordinator for the school he became deputy head three years ago before being alerted by the previous head last year that she was planning to retire. He still had to negotiate a series of tough interviews before being given the job which he started this September.

St. Gregory’s, which improved its rating to ‘Good’ after its most recent inspection, was described by parents as a ‘happy place’ according to the report and that is something Craig is eager to continue.

He says, “My dream is to continue to serve all parts of our community. I am blessed to work with such dedicated members of staff who want the very best for our pupils. We are always keen to welcome pupils to our school so if you are looking for a school place please get in touch. We would be happy to take you on a tour of our wonderful school. There is something very special about St. Gregory’s. “
