The man who stabbed to death the partner of his former girlfriend in a West Ealing pub has been found guilty of murder.

59-year-old Timothy Simon from Dalston was in the Star and Scorpion pub on Uxbridge Road at 11.55pm on Saturday, 23 July at a birthday party.

58-year-old Wayne Phillips, who was from West Hampstead, arrived with his long-term partner, who had previously been Simon’s girlfriend, and another women carrying presents into the pub which they were bringing from the boot of their car. Simon and Mr Phillips were known to each other, but their relationship was not friendly as Simon had not come to terms with his former girlfriend being with another man.

Shortly after other party goers had greeted them at the entrance to the pub, an altercation developed between the two men during which Simon pulled out a knife and fatally stabbed Mr Phillips in the heart. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 12:29am the following morning having lost too much blood for paramedics to save him.

Simon left the scene but was arrested on suspicion of murder and charged on 25 July 2022.

Detective Chief Inspector Neil Rawlinson, who led the investigation, said, “The entire encounter was captured on CCTV and although Simon maintained at trial that the folding knife was not his, he could be seen initially making a stabbing movement with his right hand, before extending the blade and using it to stab Mr Phillips.

Simon was found guilty on Friday, 24 March, at Isleworth Crown Court of murdering Wayne Phillips and he has been remanded to appear at the same court on 5 April for sentencing.

DCI Rawlinson said afterwards, “I am pleased that the right verdict was reached and that Wayne Phillips' loved ones may find a small measure of comfort in knowing that the man who took Wayne from them has been held to account.”

“This was a senseless murder that was committed for no other reason than insecurity. Timothy Simon’s actions have left Wayne Phillips’s loved ones devastated and even now, almost a year on, they continue to struggle to come to terms with their loss. Our thoughts are with them today.”
