A mentally ill man from Greenford who killed his mother is due to be sentenced at the Old Bailey.

A judge is set to consider psychiatric reports on 32-year-old Shanil Patel who battered 62-year-old Hansa Patel to death with a cricket bat while his father slept upstairs.

The killing took place on Wednesday, 25 November at the family’s home in Drew Gardens.

Hansa Patel had retired from work at Ealing Hospital and was described by her neighbours as a kind person.

Her son wandered off after the attack and a police helicopter was called to search for him. He was detained the next day.

He was found unfit to plead but a ‘trial of the facts’ determined that his acts led to his mother’s death.

He had been diagnosed as a paranoid schizophrenic over 10 years ago and his mother had taken retirement to help care for him.

His illness was being treated and he had taken his medication on the day of his attack but it is believed that lockdown had made it more difficult to cope and that contributed to the triggering of the attack. He was prone to hallucinations but he had previously been able to control them.

Sentencing will take place on Thursday 16 December.
