Two men have been sentenced to a combined total of forty years in jail after being found guilty of killing of Balbir Johal in Southall.

They stabbed him after becoming involved in an altercation with him earlier this year. 48-year-old Mr Johal made his way to Ealing Hospital but died shortly after arriving.

Hassan Mohamed, aged 24 of Clarence Street, Southall was found guilty of the murder following a trial at the Old Bailey.
This Tuesday, 23 October he was sentenced to 26 years imprisonment and told he must serve the full term before being considered for release. Yaasiin Yussuf, aged 21, of no fixed abode, was convicted of manslaughter. He has been sentenced to 14 years imprisonment and an additional three years on license on release. He will serve nine and half years in prison before being considered for release.

At approximately 5.20pm on Monday, 19 March, police were notified by Ealing Hospital staff that Balbir Johal who was from Slough had been admitted to hospital suffering stab injuries. The cause of death was later determined to be a haemorrhage from a stab wound to the right femoral vein.

Detectives from the Met's Homicide and Major Crime Command established that Mr Johal was involved in an altercation with two men on Marlborough Road, Southall near the junction with Brent Road at around 4.57pm. CCTV captured the incident and showed two men in a white Mercedes pulling up alongside Mr Johal before getting out and speaking to him. One then returned to the vehicle and armed himself with a knife from inside the car before chasing after the victim and fatally stabbing him.

He was driven to hospital by a family member and treated for his injuries but could not be saved.

The following day, on Tuesday, 20 March, Mohamed and Yussuf were stopped by police on Friary Road in Acton. They were in the car that had been seen on CCTV. They were arrested on suspicion of murder and subsequently charged.

Detective Chief Inspector Nicky Wall, of the Homicide and Major Crime Command, said: “This fateful encounter, despite the best efforts of medical staff, cost Balbir his life.

“Those who carry and use knives must face the consequences of their actions and we hope these sentences serve as a deterrent to anyone else thinking of carrying dangerous weapons on our streets.”
