A 16-year-old boy charged with the murder of Richard Mannington Bowes during riots in Ealing has been remanded in custody.

68 year old Mr Bowes is believed to have been attacked as he tried to stamp out a fire in Spring Bridge Road on 8 August.

Mr Bowes, of Haven Green, never regained consciousness and died in hospital on 11 August, three days after sustaining head injuries.

The boy, from Hounslow, who cannot be named because of his age, was also charged with violent disorder and four counts of burglary in relation to alleged looting at a William Hill betting shop, a Tesco Express store, a Blockbusters video shop and a restaurant.

He is due to appear at the Old Bailey on 18 August.

His mother, 31, also appeared before Croydon magistrates, charged with perverting the course of justice.

She too was remanded in custody to appear at the Old Bailey on the same day as her son, who is being held in secure accommodation.

The Richard Mannington Bowes Relief Fund has been set up to help people living in the area who were affected by the riots.

More details will be revealed about the fund at a special meeting at the Council today (Tuesday 16th Aug) at 7pm.
