Seven awards for the borough's green spaces

Ealing Borough has won its first gold medal at the London in Bloom Awards (8 September 2014) in the large city category.

Horsenden Hill in Perivale came first for the second year running in the best meadow award, at the ceremony which took place at The Oval cricket ground.

Southall Manor House Grounds and Hanger Hill Park both won silver gilt awards in the small parks and park categories (respectively).

Walpole Park in Ealing scooped a silver medal in the large park category. Other silver awards were handed to Fox Wood conservation area and Hanger Hill Wood, also in the conservation category.

All in all, the council won a total of seven awards for its parks, gardens and open spaces at the ceremony, which is one more award than last year’s total.

London in Bloom is designed to promote gardening, horticulture and biodiversity across the city, to make it a greener and cleaner place to live, work and visit. It is one of 17 regional campaigns, with overall category winners going on to compete in the Britain in Bloom competition, which is organised by the Royal Horticultural Society.

Councillor Bassam Mahfouz, cabinet member for transport and environment said:

“To win gold is an absolutely amazing achievement, particularly in the ultra-competitive ‘city’ category. I remember how proud I felt showing the London in Bloom judges around our parks when they came to inspect back in July. They were thoroughly impressed and I’m ecstatic with the result.

“What is particularly good is that we have done well in lots of different categories this year; including for conservation in our more wild open spaces and not just our ornamental gardens and parks. It shows we’re on the right track with our policy of encouraging bio-diversity and contributing to a cleaner, greener London.”
