The life and work of innovative engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel will be celebrated with a free guided walk through Hanwell and Southall this Sunday, 9 April.

To mark the bi-centenary of his birth, national celebrations will be held throughout 2006, including exhibitions, competitions, walks and trails and arts projects.

Wharncliffe Viaduct designed by Brunel

Whilst famed for icons such as the Clifton Suspension Bridge near Bristol , Brunel was also responsible for two major feats of engineering in Ealing.

The Wharncliffe Viaduct at Hanwell and the ' Three Bridges ' in Southall were designed by Brunel more that 150 years ago and are still in use today. Dr Jonathan Oates, local history archivist at the local history centre in Ealing's Central Library, will be leading the guided walk to these sites.

The walk will start at Hanwell train station at 2pm, and will cover 2 miles, lasting around two hours. Some parts of the route may be muddy, so walking shoes are recommended.

The walk is free, but as it is weather-dependent, people are advised to book in advance and leave contact details, should the walk have to be postponed.

People can book by either visiting or phoning the Local History Centre:

A special free leaflet is now available showing a map with the walk outline, plus information on the history of the viaduct and the 'Three Bridges'. This leaflet is available from the local history centre.
