“London Open House - Sept 17th and 18th”

Unique access to some of London's finest local buildings

Following the overwhelming success of last year’s Open House, this year’s event will take place on 17th and 18th September 2005.

In total, 500 contemporary and historical architecturally significant (and often private) buildings will open their doors to the public including many in the local area..

Victoria Thornton, Director of Open House, comments: “Architecture is rightly considered a symbol of a city’s culture, its identity and its personality, and the weekend is a celebration of all of this.”

The programme, organised by the architecture education charity Open House, hosts a huge range of buildings from private homes, historical houses, arts spaces and contemporary offices to studios, Institutions, City banks, and government buildings. All access is completely free of charge, and in some areas, guided walks have been arranged so that someone with local interest can explain the background to the buildings.  The guides are very well informed, and a good crowd certainly enjoyed last year's sociable Ealing Green walk (including a lively debate about the location of the village's plague pits. And, we are glad to report, they are not in that grassy bit in the middle of St Mary's Road, but are apparently down near the A4 heading towards Brentford - bad luck, TW8).

Details of dates are available on the Open House London website, though for a simpler way of getting details of buildings/houses, maps, opening hours and a brief description of what makes that particular place special, you need to get down to your local library for a free guide.
