“Opening Eyes, Minds & Doors”

A chance to get unique access to some of the finest local buildings

Following the overwhelming success of last year’s Open House, this year’s event will take place on 18th & 19th September. In 2003 an estimated 350,000 visits were made to buildings across the capital.

In total, 500 contemporary and historical architecturally significant (and often private) buildings will open their doors to the public including many in the local area..

Victoria Thornton, Director of Open House, comments: “Architecture is rightly considered a symbol of a city’s culture, its identity and its personality, and the weekend is a celebration of all of this.”

The programme, organised by the architecture education charity Open House, hosts a huge range of buildings from private homes, historical houses, arts spaces and contemporary offices to studios, Institutions, City banks, and government buildings. All access is completely free of charge, and in some areas, guided walks have been arranged so that someone with local interest can explain the background to the buildings.

Engineers and architects will be on hand in many of the buildings to answer questions about their construction and design.

Details of dates are available on the Open House London website, and they have cunningly hidden the list of houses open in each area in the most obscure places. On the site, click "Open House London", then from the "Buildings Information" section, there's an online search by borough. For a simpler way of getting details of buildings/houses, maps, opening hours and a brief description of what makes that particular place special, you need to get down to your local library in late August for a free guide.
