Local
Schools meet Asian girl footballer
Sarah Victor Bends it like Beckham at Gunnersbury Park Museum
To raise awareness of local museums among the Black and Asian communities, twelve London museums held an exhibition at the GLA building during July and August. Each museum chose a local Black or Asian hero who was photographed, interviewed and asked to donate an object to their museum. The photographs and chosen objects formed the Local Heroes exhibition at the GLA (organised by the London Museums Agency and supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund).
Gunnersbury Park Museum, the local museum for the boroughs of Ealing and Hounslow, chose Sarah Victor as their local hero. Sarahs family come from Pakistan but she grew up in Hounslow and now plays football for Brentford Womens Football Team - a real life example of the Bend it Like Beckham story. Sarah has given her training astro-turf boots to the museums collections. These are now on show at Gunnersbury Park Museum.
On
Thursday September 11, at 12.30, Sarah will be at Gunnersbury Park Museum
to meet girl footballers from two local schools Acton High School, Ealing
and The Heathland School, Hounslow.
The girls and their teachers will be able to see the display about Sarah
and will be able to talk to her about their aspirations and their interest
in football. They will also talk to the Deputy Curator of the museum about
their ideas on museums and what sort of objects they would choose to put
in a museum to reflect their own lives.
Sarah will then take the school parties over to one of the Gunnersbury Park football pitches where they will have some coaching and a mini inter-borough match.
