"We had our loft converted last year by Scott McCabe Associates (), who we chose because they were the most recommended firm of the three we shortlisted (and the largest, so they could start soonest). Most of the recommendations came from the chiswickW4 forum and Geronimo. [The other two companies we shortlisted were Ray O'Brien, 07770 793 120 - 020 8579 1721 and Firminger and Firminger, 8567 7997 - who we used before for our flat roof at the back and were good]. "We selected Scott McCabe as a result of negative feedback on other companies we were looking at and some positive feedback on your website. I work as a design consultant in the construction industry so it's probably fair to say I have high standards and am fairly thorough when going through contracts. Our overall opinion of Scott McCabe was that they were very poor for the following reasons; 1) Programme - Originally quoted in writing as around 4 weeks, then in writing again up to 6weeks (after the order was placed), eventually completed around 9-10 weeks. We were also told that Scott would agree an outline programme at his pre build visit - unfortunately even after the stairs were installed he felt 'it was too early to agree an end date.' If we hadn't chased on a daily and weekly basis I can't help feeling the works would still be going on. 2) Quality Control - There didn't appear to be any. The plumber hacked through our bedroom ceiling at the wrong end and installed pipes despite us agreeing with the foreman that they would go in the new wall, skirtings were not aligned and the new window was provided with separate internal glass panes that had a different finish and alignment. In the case of the window despite coming back to replace the panes they replaced them like for like so the problem still existed! It is also worth highlighting that we received an electrical part P certificate despite one of the new sockets being completely dead - this would suggest that the electrician didn't even do a polarity check. 3) Overall Management - Despite being told to liase with the foreman on a daily basis his only response was 'You'll have to ask Scott about that.' In addition we ended ringing the electrician, plasterer and decorators direct to arrange for works to be done. There were numerous delays as each time a new bit of work was due to commence the parts would be ordered at the last minute. Plant pots were broken and just left without mention and when the scaffolding was removed we had to clear the rubbish. General defects / incomplete work only appeared to be actioned when we raised issues. I could go on but the above covers the general issues. Interestingly despite having paid our final invoice several weeks ago we are yet to receive the guarantees promised. We would strongly recommend against anyone using Scott McCabe for their loft conversion. |
