A Whine About the Mousaka

Ealing home to the first ever British Nando's

The Wine and Mousaka has been a feature of Haven Green for years. Thirty two years to be exact.

But only in name. I had been to the Kew restaurant of the same name years ago and loved the atmosphere and food so expected good things from this place.

The exterior isn't flashy but that has never put me off. Some of the best food I've eaten has had humble origins. The Wine and Mousaka is cosy and I could picture raucous winter evenings sipping wine and feasting on melt in the mouth lamb. But the images started to fade as the evening progressed.

We were greeted by a polite waitress who asked the chef before seating us whether he was happy to feed us. Apparently he did indeed want our money and we were handed scruffy photocopied menus. I mention the menus because my first thought on seeing them was that the food in this place was bound to be amazing. Surely the management had to feel supremely confident in their product to let the embellishments slide.

I went for a garlic prawn starter and my partner opted for

souvla. Ring ahead and secure one as they don’t always have them on the night and you won’t be disappointed.
