Review of Meru's cafe in Northfields
Meru's cafe on Northfield Avenue provides an authentic Portuguese daytime experience, with traditional breads and pastries. You can have your sandwiches made with organic home-baked bread, Portuguese rolls or the usual French sticks, ciabatta and croissants, with good quality ingredients for the fillings. I'd recommend the wafer-fine continental deli ham, and the toasted sandwiches, at around £2.00. The pastries come from a specialist bakers, and include custard tarts, jam or almond tarts at £1.00 apiece, chocolate cakes and more goodies. A mug of cappuccino costs £1.30.
When you enter, you are met by calm and pleasant service, and a relaxing waft of gentle Latin-style ballads (no fado, you might be relieved to hear. Unless you're Portuguese and like that sort of thing). The decor is another example of the successful warm orange/wood/chrome combo. Only the beautiful shop window, designed for presenting a tempting array of goods to the outside world, looks bare from the inside. There is plenty of room for buggies. If you were to go past on a Thursday night at 7.45 pm however, a transformation takes place: the tables are pushed back, curtains put up and the salsa class kicks in. Enquire inside the cafe if you're interested in signing up.
All in all, a valuable addition to cafe society on Northfield Avenue.
