St Saviour's Infant and Primary School World Fair

Ealing school celebrates diverse community

St. Saviour’s Infant and Primary School in Ealing celebrates its unique cultural diversity by hosting a World Fair this Saturday July 4th. Parents, children and the whole community are invited. Highlights include an award-winning African storyteller, Spanish salsa dancing, traditional Maori dancers, Serbian and East European foods, a traditional English tea shop and a chance to play Canadian hockey.

With a school population of 350, many of the children and parents come from all over the world. There will be a parade of nations where children and parents from the school wear costumes from their home countries with pride. Children will be invited to mark their home country on a giant map.

Local storyteller Akuba (Grace Quansah), who has twice been awarded ‘Aspiring Female Storyteller’ by Black Women in the Arts, will entertain with African-based storytelling. A former lecturer with the Open University, and a parent at St Saviour’s, Akuba has been enchanting audiences of all ages since the late 1990s.

Fair-goers will be treated to a Chinese ribbon dance performance by Taiwanese-born Jih-Wen Yeh. She will also run a workshop teaching the children how to do a ribbon dance themselves.

London based Maori club, Ngāti Rānana, will perform traditional waiata (songs) and haka dance. They have in the past performed in front of the Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh, the Commonwealth Secretary-General, and UK Prime Minster Gordon Brown.

Throughout the day, families and children will be able to enjoy food from a South African braai or barbeque, sweet and savoury delicacies from eastern Europe and an Olde English Tea Shoppe. There will also be traditional fairground rides, a raffle, Spanish sangria as well as books and cards on sale.

Ruth Abel, Chair of the St Saviour’s Friends Association, says “this fair is a fantastic way to embrace the wonderful diversity within our school family. We would welcome anyone in the local community to come and join us as we will have an exciting range of things of interest to all ages”.
