Climate Change - An Inconvenient Truth For Ealing?

Judith Hann of Tomorrow's World Fame hosts Ealing Civic Society Lecture

Ealing Civic Society's 2007 Public Lecture will feature Judith Hann, former presenter of BBC 2's Tomorrow's World.

It kicks off at 7.30pm on Tuesday 26 June at the Liz Cantell Room at Ealing Town Hall, New Broadway, Ealing.

Everyone is welcome to attend this free public lecture.

Ealing Civic Society is concerned about how Ealing looks and what it is like as a place to live. The aims is for it to continue to be a prosperous and attractive place. "We keep constant watch on what is happening in our Borough and we get actively involved," the society states. To date the society has:

  • worked with the Town council and the Police to tackle the problem of the growth of licensed premises in the town centre: in recent months opposing various applications for new or extended licences;
  • kept a check on all planning applications (around 200 a month) and objected to them when necessary including appearing at public inquiries;
  • produced a booklet advising home owners on how to preserve and improve their property*;
  • helped in the preparation of new guidance on shop fronts and on improvements to street lighting and the introduction of closed circuit television in the town centre;
  • checked on the Borough's Unitary Development Plan and secured amendments to it;
  • promoted the designation of Conservation Areas and plans for their protection and enhancement;
  • promoted the creation of a Green corridor along the A40;
  • participated in the Ealing Town Centre and Tourism Forums.

As well as all this, the society runs an Annual Design Award for new buildings and refurbishments; the annual public lecture (as publicised); and a quarterly Newsletter for members. It belongs to the Civic Trust, the London Forum and the Ealing Arts Council. The society states that it is not connected with any political party or local authority; is fully independent and relies on voluntary subscriptions.

"We work to conserve and improve the Borough because we care about the local environment. If you care too, you can join the Society for £5 a year (which includes the whole household), attend our meetings, receive our Newsletter and help where you can. The Society has been going strong for over 30 years. The more people the Society represents, the more attention will be paid to what it says."
