Viv Ellis pops along and enjoys a community day out in the sun .. and rain
It was this year’s Family Fun Day at Copley Close on Saturday (Aug 27) and it didn’t rain. Well not all the time.
Organised by EASE – the community group, there certainly was loads of fun. You could get your nails done, your face painted, buy lovely plants and beg grown at Ealing Hospital’s allotment by the Mental Health Trust and eat food from West Indian fare to cupcakes.
“This is a regular event” said Jackie Sear, one of the organisers, “but this year especially we felt it was important to re-affirm Hanwell as a close community after the riots”
There was entertainment; after we’d enjoyed the rhythms of Drum Caribe – there was a master class inside- which was very popular with grown ups and kids alike. Fifteen year-old Duncan Brookfield, the lead singer with Hanwell’s very own boy band, The Grifters did a solo spot. And he clearly has fans in high places as when he sang “Here Comes The Sun” – it did! Sadly he followed that with “Umbrella”- and the sun promptly disappeared again.)And finally a dance routine from local children.
Steve Pound MP made an appearance, perky & cheeky as ever, he gave out certificates to lots of youngsters who’ve been good community workers in the last year.
