Smoke and flames from a huge plastics fire at Warren Farm could be seen across London last night.

Ten fire engines and around 70 firefighters and officers were called to the blaze at the council's storage yard on Windmill Lane in Southall.

The fire was affecting a large number of plastic wheelie bins stored in a chain linked compound covering an area of around 100 metres by 100 metres.

Smoke and flames from the blaze were very visible across west London and the Brigade’s ‘999’ control officers have taken around 40 emergency calls from members of the public. Fire officers advised that because of the smoke those in the area should keep doors and windows closed as a precaution.

The Brigade was called at 2057. Crews from Southall, Heston, Ealing, Wembley, Ruislip, Feltham, Chiswick and Hayes fire stations are at the scene. Crews have been at the scene through the night.

The cause of the fire is not known at this stage.
