Southall on a Weekday with Joanna Dudzinska

When: Wednesday, January 17th, 1 pm - 4 pm
Meeting at: Southall Railway Station, South Road, Southall UB2 TAA
Join me and Cathy Swift on a walk around the historic Southall Green area.
Cathy said: ‘Despite being brought up in Hayes, and now living in Ealing, I knew virtually nothing about Southall and its history until I started researching for a play I am producing and directing. Rafta, Rafta by Ayub Khan-Din (writer of East is East) will be performed at The Questors Theatre, Ealing, 10-12 May 2018. I can think of no-one better than Joanna to show me the best sights in Southall!’
The tour will last three hours so there will be plenty of time for chatting, getting to know one another and a bit of networking.
We will meet on Wednesday, January 17th, at 1 pm outside Southall Station and walk towards the Tudor Manor House, War Memorial and the park with wooden animals, colourful mosaics and a view onto the Gurdwara overlooking Havelock Cemetery where the Martin brothers rest.
On the way we will visit the largest importers of Indian musical instruments in Europe, and other Indian shops: a baker’s, a jeweller’s, a ladies’clothes shop and a picture gallery/framing shop with portraits of the Sikh gurus on display. We will stop by the Indian Workers’ Association premises to talk about over 50 years of their struggle and achievements.
This time we will be shown around the Hindu temple considered to be the oldest in Britain and get some Hindu deities explained. Also a visit to the largest Gurdwara outside India is an experience not to be missed. We have to enter it without shoes on and with our heads covered. Mind you, at every Gurdwara or Hindu temple, a blessed vegetarian meal is offered so we won’t be hungry.
Southall’s rural and industrial past will get a mention too and we can relax at a local café before we part.
