As winter lingers, audiences are invited to escape into a world of wonder and renewal with The Secret Garden, a new stage adaptation of Frances Hodgson Burnett’s beloved novel.

Running at The Playhouse in The Questors Theatre from 24 to 28 February it is performed by members of Questors Youth Theatre (QYT), this heartwarming production promises a magical tale of friendship, self-discovery and the healing power of nature.

The story follows Mary Lennox, a spoiled and lonely girl sent to live with her reclusive uncle at a remote Yorkshire manor after the death of her parents. As she explores her new surroundings, Mary discovers a neglected garden hidden behind locked gates. With the help of new friends and a growing sense of independence, she begins to restore the garden—and herself—bringing life and joy back to a household steeped in grief.

First published in 1911, The Secret Garden is widely regarded as a classic of English children’s literature. Burnett’s novel has captivated generations with its themes of resilience, emotional growth and the redemptive power of the natural world. The story has been adapted many times for stage and screen, including a celebrated 1991 Broadway musical by Marsha Norman and Lucy Simon, which earned multiple Tony nominations, and a 2020 film adaptation starring Dixie Egerickx and Colin Firth.

This new production by QYT offers a fresh take on the timeless tale, with a talented cast drawn from across the youth theatre’s age groups. Each evening performance will begin with pre-show entertainment by junior members of QYT.

Performances run nightly at 7pm from 24 to 28 February, with a matinee at 2pm on Saturday 28 February. A captioned performance will be held on Thursday 26 February. The show is suitable for all ages and offers a perfect half-term outing for families looking to experience live theatre in a welcoming setting.
