The annual Northfields Allotment Open Day is taking place this Sunday (6 July).

The gates to the plots will be open from 1pm to 5pm on Northfield Avenue.

This year’s event sees the introduction of the History Trail on which visitors can follow a map highlighting some of the site’s most characterful old sheds, as well as artefacts found on site, including vintage bottles, tools, and even 1970s crisp packets unearthed by plotholders over the years. It promises to be a fascinating peek into the past lives of the allotment.

There will be a chance to explore a wide variety of allotment plots and see what’s in season as well as see a wildlife-friendly shed built from recycled materials, an apiary and a WWII Anderson shelter.

Judging displays will show the best plots, based on traditional allotment criteria.

Refreshments will be available including tea, coffee and cakes, plus a BBQ, bar, and a plant and produce stall.

As London’s oldest allotment, dating back to 1832 when the Bishop of London set the land aside for local residents, the site remains a popular green space with 173 fully rented plots and a waiting list of over 450 hopeful growers.

Entry is free, though donations are welcome to support the site. Dogs are welcome if kept on a lead.

Visitors should enter through the main gates at the northern end of Northfield Avenue (opposite Dean Court).

Christina Fox, Chair of the Allotments Committee, said, “The plots are full of life at this time of year, and we’re excited to share not just what’s growing, but some of the allotment’s hidden history too. It’s a great day out for all ages.”
