Crowning of Queen Viola to be followed by dancing around the Maypole
May 16, 2024 The annual Brentham May Day celebration is taking place this Saturday (18 May) with a procession around the garden suburb. Led by a marching band, it will depart from the Brentham Club at 2.30pm and continues to the crowning of the May Queen Viola back at the club at 3pm after which there will be Maypole and country dancing. Hundreds of spectators are expected to line the pavements with the road closed for the duration. Taking part in the procession are boys in fancy dress, the May Queen-elect, Britannia, Jack-in-the-green, and more than 150 young girls, all in white and adorned with fresh flowers. The curious figure of Jack-in-the-green (who looks like a walking and dancing bush and is often barefoot) adds to the festive air. A special tea will be laid on for the children after the dancing. The organisers believe that the celebration held in the Brentham Garden Suburb may be one of the largest continuing across Britain.
