The Arts Society Ealing hosts timely talk by Vivienne Lawes
June 15, 2026 You are invited to discover the extraordinary world of Antoni Gaudí at the next monthly lecture hosted by The Arts Society Ealing. Taking place on Monday 22 June, the lecture, *Antoni Gaudí – Master Builder of Barcelona*, will explore the life and work of the celebrated Spanish architect whose distinctive designs have become synonymous with the city of Barcelona. The event forms part of international commemorations marking the centenary of Gaudí's death in 1926. A leading figure of Catalan Modernism, Gaudí transformed architecture through his innovative use of form, colour and natural inspiration, creating buildings that continue to captivate millions of visitors each year. Among his most famous works is the Sagrada Família, Barcelona's iconic basilica. Construction began in 1882 and continues to this day, making it one of the world's most remarkable and enduring building projects. The church is Spain's most visited monument and one of seven Gaudí works recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The lecture will be presented by renowned art historian Vivienne Lawes, who brings more than 25 years of experience in the art world. A curator, author and journalist, Lawes teaches at several prestigious institutions including Sotheby's Institute of Art, the University of the Arts London, Imperial College London, SOAS and the City & Guilds of London Art School. She has published extensively on art and cultural subjects and has served as Senior UK Consultant to Singapore gallery One East Asia since 2011. The talk will examine how Gaudí developed new architectural techniques, drew inspiration from the natural world and religious symbolism, and helped shape Barcelona's unique urban identity. Attendees can expect a fascinating insight into one of the most original architects in history and the enduring legacy of his work. The lecture begins at 7.30pm on Monday 22 June at St Barnabas Church Hall, Pitshanger Lane, Ealing, W5 1QG. Doors open at 6.45pm. Visitors are welcome to attend, with admission priced at £10 per lecture (£3 for students). Payment can be made by card on the evening. The Arts Society Ealing belongs to the large umbrella organisation, The Arts Society, previously known as the National Association of Decorative and Fine Arts Societies (NADFAS), which was founded in 1968.
