More than 130 bags of litter were collected across four London boroughs including Ealing on World Clean Up Day (Saturday 20 September), as volunteers from the London branch of social justice charity Who Is Hussain? joined forces with local councils and community groups to tackle waste and fly-tipping.

The clean-up effort, which also took place in Harrow, Brent and Westminster), was supported by Harrow Litter Pickers, Veolia in Westminster, Brent Council’s “Don’t Mess With Brent” campaign, and LAGER Can—a volunteer-led group in Ealing that organises regular litter picks and promotes civic pride.

Local representatives including Gareth Thomas MP (Harrow West), Aysha Raza (Councillor for Central Greenford), and Bassam Mahfouz AM (London Assembly Member for Ealing and Hillingdon) took part in the initiative, highlighting the environmental and public health risks posed by unmanaged litter.

Speaking from Kirchin Road in West Ealing, Bassam Mahfouz said, “We have got to take pride in our local area, and that is why I am joining Who Is Hussain today who are doing a street clean-up.”

Founded in 2012, Who Is Hussain? is a global non-profit organisation inspired by the values of Hussain Ibn Ali, a 7th-century figure revered for his commitment to justice, compassion and community service. The charity operates in over 90 cities worldwide, organising blood drives, food distributions, and social action campaigns aimed at promoting dignity and equality.

Kumail Jaffer, London team lead for the charity, said the event was “a resounding success and a testament to community spirit.”

He added, “Fostering community spirit is a key pillar of our work because looking after our neighbours was a core value of Hussain Ibn Ali’s philosophy. But the fight against litter and fly-tipping cannot be confined to one day a year. Keeping our streets clean is an everyday civic and patriotic duty.”
