Construction has started on a new 'green' social rent housing scheme next to the Havelock Estate in Southall.

Toplocks Depot, is a Site of Importance for Nature Conservation (SINC) and Housing Association Catalyst who are delivering the scheme, has committed to protect the site’s biodiversity as a condition of planning permission.

The plans include 26 new homes, new roads and a new pedestrian and cycle link to the adjacent Havelock estate, which Catalyst is regenerating in partnership with Ealing Council.

Designed by Conran + Partners, the estate will include new landscaping, green roofs on a number of the new homes and a central green with a play space. Catalyst has also committed to planting an orchard in the nearby Glade Lane Canalside Park

There will be a footbridge over the adjacent dock, creating a new pedestrian and cycle link to the Havelock estate and supporting the Mayor of London’s goals to improve access to nearby green space.

Tom Titherington, Executive Director of Property & Growth said: “As well as creating exceptional new social rented homes in Southall, this scheme will complement our ongoing regeneration of the Havelock estate. We’re committed to delivering real positive change in this area, and we’re very pleased to be increasing our presence here and providing an uplift in the number of homes for social rent.”

Victoria Whenray, Director at Conran + Partners, said ‘Working closely with Catalyst, we have developed a proposal which unlocks a site for much-needed new and affordable homes in London. The proposal complements and draws on the existing context – in this case a wonderful mix of industry, canal and natural habitat – to create new homes, green space and connections that will make a valuable contribution to the neighbourhood overall.’
