Ealing Cleans Up After Storm Darragh |

Area gets off relatively lightly compared to other parts of the country
December 9, 2024 The clean up has already begun following a weekend of high winds during Storm Darragh. There were no reports of any injuries or serious damage caused in the Ealing area which certainly got off lightly compared to the rest of the country. Luckily nobody was hurt when hoardings covering the Lloyds Bank branch, being fitted out in the former premises of Amazon Fresh, came loose and were strewn across the street. A local tree surgeon said that he had not been as busy as expected given the intensity of the winds which consistently reached over 40mph on Saturday and Sunday (7 and 8 December). He put this down to Storm Bert, a few weeks earlier, taking out any already weakened trees. The rest of the country was less fortunate with 1.5million homes left without electricity as power cables were taken down by gusts measured at up to 96mph. Most have since had power restored as engineers worked through the night. Devon and Cornwall had the worst of it according to National Grid, with the West Country and Wales also badly affected. Two people have been reported as being killed during the storm including a man in Lancashire hit by a tree while driving a van and another man in Birmingham was also killed on the road.
Although the highest winds were not in London, Heathrow still had to cancel over 200 flights as those that did land struggled with cross winds. All the Royal Parks were closed along with the Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park.
