TV presenter showing support for the scouting movement
November 14, 2024 The Brigantia Explorers in Ealing were recently joined by Liam MacDevitt the television presenter and former professional footballer. Best known for his work as a reporter on BBC's Football Focus and Match of the Day X, he wanted to support people in the community who were making a difference by volunteering and learn about the work of the Scouts. He said, "I don’t think any of my years as a child, which led me to achieve those dreams and those goals, would have been possible without volunteers. They really are like the heartbeat of a local community." Scouts offer over 200 different activities from thrills and adventure to creative activities and historic learning, so there's something to suit everyone. Adult volunteer Diogene De Souza said, “It’s a great honour and a privilege for Brigantia to be part of Liam’s introduction to Scouts. I know the Explorers are having a really great time running around and playing Frisbee with him. “One of the main skills that young people are getting from outdoor adventures, is resilience,” said Liam. “Putting young people in a position where they’re exposed to problems and difficulties is something that can help them later in life. Being adaptable from the lessons you learn outdoors and being able to overcome challenges is so important for young people.” Young leader and Explorer Ben said, “My one piece of advice for Liam would be to follow the Scout motto, and always be prepared, because you really don’t know what to expect.” 85% of young people in Scouts take part in activities they have never tried before. Immy, another young leader and Explorer, added, “It’s a good community to be in, because everyone’s really nice and welcoming. You learn skills that you won’t learn anywhere else.” Ealing and Hanwell Scouts are also looking for additional volunteers to support the Unit. This could be working directly with the teenagers, or as a Trustee, or doing some work in the background which might be IT, administration or fund raising to name but a few. If you want to get involved either as a young person aged 14 to 18 or an adult volunteer email joinin@ealingandhanwellexplorers.org.uk.
